Haunted Hayride The Movie: review

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 27 June 2012 08:56 (A review of Haunted Hayride The Movie: )

Indie slasher film directed by Warren F. Disbrow. The film starts off just right with a violent and bloody opening and continued to entertain me for the next 90 minutes.

There's LOTS of kills and even though there could have been more variety with some of them here and there I can't deny smiling when Hate (the film's slasher villain) dispatches a victim. The FX is a mix and practical and CGI and looks good enough considering the low budget. Hate is a fun villain to watch and even though he'll never join the ranks of Freddy and Jason I liked him and would to see a whole series build around him.

Using actual Hay rides and Halloween shops around the NJ area gives the movie a sense of authenticity and Disbrow utilizes these locations in the best ways possible.

The acting is an improvement over the Flesh and Blood films but still amateurish. Some give better performances than others. This leads to my biggest problem with the film. I didn't give a shit about the main characters of the film. Hell they don't even take the hay ride until the final 10 minutes of the film. The stuff with them in the middle of the film feels like padding. A person I did care about was the character of Mr. Brock. He's a likable old guy who's concerned why his employees are suddenly disappearing one by one.

Overall a solid slasher flick worth seeing if you're an indie horror fan.

Flesh Eaters from Outer Space / Invasion for Flesh and Blood (Warren F. Disbrow Double Feature) review

Posted : 11 years, 9 months ago on 27 June 2012 06:28 (A review of Flesh Eaters from Outer Space / Invasion for Flesh and Blood (Warren F. Disbrow Double Feature))

Flesh Eaters from Outer Space & Invasion for Flesh and Blood

This horror/sci-fi double feature was released on DVD by Troma and was directed indie filmmaker Warren F Disbrow (director of the entertaining indie slasher film "Haunted Hay Ride"). Shot on video in the 90's, both films are cheap and nasty but far from the best of their kind. None of the acting in either film is anywhere close to being good (it's pretty awful) and there's padding to the run time.

BUT Disbrow gets two things very right and it's what makes both films watchable to splatter/SOV fans: The Monsters and the gore. The Alien beasts in both films look they stepped right out of a 1950's B-movie and Disbrow is not afraid to throw around the gore like there's no tomorrow. Limbs, spinal cords, penis' etc. are all ripped off with glee and I couldn't help smiling every time someone met their end.

Warren F. Disbrow might not have good actors or a big budget but he made two entertaining enough B-movie's. He clearly has a love for this kind of stuff and fortunately that has been carried over to Haunted Hay Ride (I have the sequel to that ordered).

I give both films 7/10's.

Supercop (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition) review

Supercop (aka Police Story III) is one of Jackie Chan's best films. Exciting, funny and action packed.
